Jung Kook Just Sold Out a Nearly 70-Year-Old Chanel Fragrance

Turns out 1957 isn't just a year, it's Gabrielle Chanel's birthday, her New York address, and now, weirdly, close to Jung Kook's own birth year too.
Chanel has released two campaign films for its newest fragrance, 1957 L’Extrait de Parfum. Although we’re not hearing a glossy voiceover here, as both films rely on the good, old-fashioned art of conversation. In Let’s Talk Parfum, Jung Kook video-calls Chanel’s in-house perfumer Olivier Polge to pick apart the scent, discussing the layers of white musk, powdery iris, cedar and vetiver. In Jung Kook Meets 1957, he turns more personal and reflects on his own career. At one point he even works out which of his own songs best captures the fragrance’s mood.

The name of the perfume has a lot more packed into it than you’d expect. 1957 marks the year Gabrielle Chanel won the Neiman Marcus Award, a turning point in the house’s relationship with America, but the number also nods to her birthday (the 19th) and the Chanel flagship’s address on New York’s 57th Street. Jung Kook, born in 1997, points out the coincidence himself in the film, joking about how close it sits to his own birth year. Asked for his own defining date, he doesn’t hesitate: 13 June 2013, BTS’s official debut.
This is Jung Kook’s first fragrance campaign since being named Chanel’s House Ambassador for Fragrances and Beauty back in December, and the reaction’s been immediate, both the original 1957 Eau de Parfum and the new Extrait sold out shortly after the campaign dropped.
