Before you know it, spring has sprung, and the first Monday of May is just around the corner. That’s right, it’s Met Gala season. To celebrate, we’re taking a look back at some of our favourite and most iconic looks at the most important night in fashion over the years. No plain black suits around here, please.
Zendaya in John Galliano for Maison Margiela and Givenchy, 2024
For “The Garden of Time”, long-term stylist and collaborator Law Roach dressed Zendaya in not one but two looks by John Galliano. The first look, an iridescent Maison Margiela dress that glints in the light like the shell of a green bottle fly, was paired with a glass-skin makeup look by Pat McGrath. For a surprise second appearance, she sported an archival Givenchy look with a bouquet headdress.

When it comes to the Met Gala, Rihanna has long been crowned the unofficial queen. For the 2018 “Heavenly Bodies” theme, she swapped a crown for silver bishop’s zuchetto and matching cape by John Galliano for Maison Margiela.
Jared Leto in Gucci, 2019
The ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion” Met Gala theme blessed us with some of the wackiest and most wonderful ensembles we’ve seen in the event’s history. None more wacky or wonderful than Jared Leto in Gucci, who brought a lifelike model of his own head in place of a bag.
Gigi Hadid in Versace, 2022
In true Met Gala spirit, Gigi Hadid turned up to the 2022 “Gilded Glamour” carpet in a larger-than-life crimson Versace puffer coat, proving that, sometimes, bigger really is better.
Cher in Bob Mackie, 1974
Most people nowadays wouldn’t bat an eye at nude looks on the red carpet or even at the Met Gala, but when Cher turned up to the Gala in a sheer, feather fringed dress in 1974, the reaction was totally different. She shocked the crowd in Bob Mackie, a risky take on “Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design”.
Zendaya in Versace, 2018
This entire list could be made up of Zendaya’s greatest hits, or just about anything from the 2018 “Heavenly Bodies” Gala. In Versace armour, Zendaya was a modern-day vision of Joan of Arc, studded with sequins, of course.
Doja Cat in Oscar de La Renta, 2023
For ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, there was competition for who came as the best-dressed Choupette (Lagerfeld’s beloved Sacred Birman). Of course, Doja Cat came out on top, not only for having ‘Cat’ in her name or the exquisite use of prosthetics, but her commitment to the bit in responding “meow” to every interview question asked on the carpet.
Kendall and Kylie Jenner in Versace, 2019
Embracing the “Camp” theme, Kendall and Kylie Jenner rocked up to the 2019 Gala in a showgirl-take on Daphne and Velma. In bright orange and purple, the sisters wore feathered Versace dresses, with Kylie even committing to a matching lavender wig.
Tyla in Balmain, 2024
Tyla nodded to the sands of time in 2024 in a Balmain sand sculpture so sharply tailored she had to be lifted up the stairs by security. Naturally, she accessorised with an hourglass.
Darren Criss in Dolce & Gabbana, 2018
We told you all the best looks come from “Heavenly Bodies”. In custom Dolce & Gabbana, Darren Criss celebrated his own “heavenly body” in a sequined mosaic-style jacket, featuring religious figures with his own face imposed on them.
