Sarah Burton Opens the Door and Invites You In for the SS27 Mens Collection
Some shows announce themselves loudly. Givenchy's SS27 was not one of them, and that was entirely the point.
Held at the house’s own address on 3, avenue George V, Sarah Burton presented a triptych of rooms, each one dedicated to a different part of the wardrobe, each one feeling less like a set and more like somewhere real. Not a backdrop. A home.
The clothes have the same quality. Burton works in archetypes, and she works in them precisely. A double-breasted tailored jacket and wide-legged trousers. A white cotton shirt. A bomber. A perfecto. These are pieces that exist in most people’s wardrobes in some form, and what Burton does is remind you why they earned their place there. Precious embroidered pieces and personal treasures sit alongside them, quietly loaded with meaning and emotion in a way that is genuinely felt rather than described. Then there are the sportswear separates in soft, bright leather, joyful in the best possible way and a welcome injection of lightness into proceedings.
The whole thing unfolded in dialogue with the work of Rachel Whiteread, an artist whose practice is built around absence, memory and the imprints people leave in domestic spaces. The connection to Burton’s intention was obvious and it worked.
“I wanted this to feel very personal and intimate,” Burton said, “and to reflect the conversations that I have with the friends of the house.” It did. That’s harder to pull off than it sounds.
