London’s Most Stylish Spring Plan? A Schiaparelli Exhibition at the V&A
London’s V&A hosts the UK’s first ever Schiaparelli exhibition.
Now spring has finally sprung, the one thing that unites all Londoners is our love for a pub garden. I’m not going to lie and say that I don’t also love a cheeky post-work pint, but indulge me when I say that sometimes (emphasis on the sometimes) I crave something a little more cultured. If you’re in the same boat, the V&A might have just the thing for you.
The museum is hosting the UK’s first ever Schiaparelli exhibition. Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art traces the brand’s heritage over the last century, from Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1920s all the way to the current creative director, Daniel Roseberry. Though Schiaparelli has been pushing fashion boundaries for over 100 years (think: shocking pink and Skeleton dresses), the house has a more current and modern reputation than heritage brands of a similar age. Images of Bella Hadid at Cannes Film Festival or Doja Cat bedazzled in 30,000 red crystals for the brand’s Paris Fashion Week show live rent-free in my head, as opposed to the 1937 Dalì-inspired lobster dress.
Curated by Stanfill, Caston and McKever, this exhibition aims to combat that by showcasing some of the little-seen and celebrated garments from Schiaparelli’s earlier history, with key focus on the work of Elsa Schiaparelli herself. Also on display will be photographs, furniture and artworks by Dalì, Picasso and Cocteau, all of whom played a key role in inspiring the designs. The exhibition runs from now until November, but we recommend getting tickets before it sells out faster than you can say Schiaparelli.
