Full Speed Ahead: Chanel takes the helm, and it’s about more than just good timing

Chanel continues its voyage as title sponsor and official timekeeper of the Oxford-Cambridge boat race.
Back in 2000, Artistic Designer of Chanel watches, Jacques Helleu, created the Chanel J12: an all black sports watch, inspired by racing yachts. The House’s first unisex sports watch, the J12 redefined luxury sportswear and horology. In 2025, Chanel was appointed as title sponsor and official timekeeper of the infamous Oxford-Cambridge boat race, now rebranded as The CHANEL J12 Boat Race.
The 2026 CHANEL J12 Boat Race took place on 4 April, and the partnership proves to be ongoing with Chanel excited to support the event into its bicentenary in 2029, and the century since the inaugural women’s race in 2027. The celebration of the inclusion of women is central to the sponsorship by Chanel J12, with the watch having been the Maison’s first unisex sports watch.

That the watch has been chosen as official timekeeping partner is also a testament to Chanel’s commitment to first-class horological technology. Time is of the essence in boat racing, so precision is key. Though Chanel is often lauded for its style, the partnership with the boat race reiterates the power of the Calibre 12.1 mechanism used in the watch. Both the watch and the race itself present a space for the harmonious meeting of fashion and functionality, sport and style.
