Dive into McQueen’s Beneath the Surface exhibition at Fotografiska Shanghai
From the Manta bag to the shores of Shanghai McQueen's Beneath the Surface is a deep dive into nature, identity and the art of reinvention.
After re-introducing the Manta bag earlier this year, fashion powerhouse McQueen continued its exploration of underwater idioms with an exhibition in Shanghai. Beneath the Surface, which took place this April, was an exploration of the beauty and power of nature, through the lens of the AW26 collection and the Manta bag.
Alongside exploring natural forms, the exhibition also presented an inquiry into the collision of raw realism and the curated self. This follows the AW26 show, in which models sported cracked porcelain masks challenging the perception of authenticity.
To round up Creative Director Seán McGirr’s trip, he opened up the exhibition with an afterparty. An extension of the McQueen Reverb series (a series of live listening sessions in London), the afterparty included performances from Mola Oddity and Amber Kuo, who fuse experimental electronics with performance art. He also took time to speak to students at Donghua University, passing on his knowledge to the next generation of creative talent.
