Dior’s New Hooper Trainer Has a Basketball Court Past and a Very Good Sole

For Winter 2026, Jonathan Anderson has turned his attention to the trainer. The Dior Hooper takes 1980s basketball footwear as its starting point, drawing from the particular era of high-tops and chunky soles that has been cycled through fashion references so many times, but then puts it through the Dior archive until it forgets where it came from.

The silhouette is clean, punctuated by a suede strip that plays the materials off each other.. The real detail is underfoot as the sole is engraved with Dior’s cannage pattern that traces back to the cane chairs in Christian Dior’s original salon and has since become one of the house’s most persistent signatures. 

It’s a habit Anderson has developed since taking the Dior menswear job, of having archive references surfacing somewhere unexpected. In his debut menswear collection he pulled from three haute couture archive dresses, the Caprice, Cigale, and Delft, and reimagined them through a menswear lens. Blending the cannage sole with a basketball trainer is the same instinct, as every step you take leaves a faint impression of the house behind it.
