Bvlgari’s Eclettica collection where fine art meets the wearable
The De Beers Riverborn Capsule celebrates Spring Equinox and artisanal mining.
Since 1884, Bvlgari has treated their creations with an artistic lens as opposed to a stylistic one. Their latest High Jewellery and High End Watch collection, Eclettica, pushes the boundaries between art and fashion more than ever before. Composed of fifteen pieces, with nine hero Capolavari ‘masterpieces’, it’s an exquisite line where artistic intuition and visionary mastery meet in harmonious union.
The line is inspired by Rome’s art history and the Art Deco era which Bvlgari is best known for interpreting. The spirit of eclecticism, which remains central to the brand’s principles, is evident in this new collection more than ever, which pulls motifs from centuries of sculpture, painting and architecture.
The Seres Scarf High Jewellery Necklace finds its roots in the Art Deco era as opposed to Roman antiquities. Inspired by the paintings of famed Polish artist Tamara de Lempicker, 1,180 individual components (pieced together over 1,600 hours, no less) come together to form a sculptural necklace that drapes over the chest like fabric. With sapphires and emeralds, and a detachable brooch, the necklace is a masterclass in jewellery engineering worthy of being framed in a museum.
Though Art Deco spirit is evident throughout the collection, the thread that ties most of it together is motifs taken from Ancient Rome. The Secret Garden Necklace, for example, is encrusted with deep green stones in a laurel-leaf like arrangement. The central pink-orange Sri Lankan Padparadscha is reminiscent of the sunset over Roman courtyards. The Serpenti Spira Cuff is a take on Roman architecture, with an white gold arranged in a silhouette akin to Roman columns, with a signature Bvlgari serpent in Fancy Vivid Yellow snaking around their cylindrical forms.
The collection includes watches, too. Though jewellery is often treated as a historic artefact, this arm of the collection pushes the boundaries between horology and art. The Notte Stellata Divas’ Dream Watch specifically recalls the starry sky that witnessed the birth of the Eternal City in 753 BC, with all the glitz and glam a diva could desire. A black opal disc is painted with lines of yellow gold tracing an astral map, with celestial constellations made of sapphires and diamonds. Though the watch deserves the ‘Divas’ Dream’ moniker simply on account of the sheer amount of bling, the bracelet is inspired by the Divas’ Dream fan motif from the Baths of Caracalla.
A sample of High End Jewellery Bags, with detachable necklaces and brooches, complete the collection, which is shot using picture books of ancient statues and illustrations as the background, as a reminder of the Eternal City that inspired it. More here.
