Blumarine’s Resort collection is a love letter to dark femininity
Romance meets power in Blumarine's most daring Resort collection yet and Irina Shayk's crystal bougainvillea top is the most talked-about piece of the season.
When I think of Blumarine, I think of soft satins, pastel colours and dainty silhouettes. Perhaps it’s in part due to the brand’s name, and in part due to its past portfolio of summer collections which epitomise high femininity, but in recent years the brand has actually made a conscious move towards the darker, edgier side of what we consider to be “feminine”. This has never been more evident than in the 2027 Resort collection.
The collection is underpinned by two core values: romance and power. And who better to represent these intricate dynamics than Irina Shayk, who effortlessly embodies both the dangerous femme fatale and lightness of summer? The collection is darkly romantic, but not devoid of colour entirely. Though black stands out across the pieces, more stereotypically summery hues of yellow, pink and lilac are also included.
The use of black and white alludes to the work of Helmut Newton, whose photography exists somewhere between softness and severity. Femininity and summer’s lightness are injected into the monochromatic arms of the collection through the use of materials like chantilly lace and macramé flowers.
The hero piece of the collection is an evening top of cabochon crystal, formed in the likeness of bougainvillea flowers. The halter-neck style top is not quite a necklace, not quite a bikini, but very on brand for the face of the collection, Irina Shayk, who wore a similar piece to the Met Gala just earlier this month.
