The trailer for Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg’s new film starring Josh O’Connor, leaves us with more questions than answers
Steven Spielberg returns to the stars with Disclosure Day a '70s-tinged alien thriller that asks less about what's out there and more about whether we can trust the people telling us.
If there’s one thing Steven Spielberg does well (and let’s be honest, there’s about a million) it’s movies about aliens. Following on from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. and War of the Worlds, the most celebrated director in modern history has recently debuted the trailer for his next extra-terrestrial blockbuster, Disclosure Day.
Disclosure Day presents itself as a somewhat distorted sequel to Close Encounters in the sense that it’s filmed through the same lens of ’70s-esque paranoia. As with every good sci-fi movie, it looks as though the audience will be left in the dark alongside the characters, with the trailer prompting more questions than it gives answers. Yes, Disclosure Day is technically an alien film, but the focus is more on human response to a crisis than the exploration of unknown life. Distrust in the government and media looks to be the overarching theme of the film, which is suitably (if not, scarily) en vogue for the world we’re living in. Just take a look at the hundreds of conspiracy theorists in the YouTube trailer comment section hypothesising that ‘disclosure day’ on June 12 will mark more than just a new cinematic release.
The film marks the seventh collaboration between Spielberg and screenwriter David Koepp, the duo having previously worked together on films like Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones, but it also marks the first time Josh O’Connor has starred in a Spielberg movie. O’Connor has already received critical acclaim for his part in Luca Guadagnino’s steamy tennis drama Challengers and his role as a disarmingly charming Prince Charles in Netflix’s The Crown, but working with Spielberg cements his place as one of the greatest actors of our generation. O’Connor plays the audience’s confidant: the whistleblower, with Emily Blunt starring as a seemingly possessed meteorologist. The rest of the cast includes familiar faces like Colin Firth and Colman Domingo, alongside another up-and-coming actor quickly propelling herself into stardom: Eve Hewson.
With a stacked cast, compelling narrative and an incredibly strong behind-the-scenes team, Disclosure Day is set to be the most highly anticipated (and highest grossing) film of 2026, alongside Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
