Six Designers, a Rented Van, and 40 Years of Fashion History

The story has become fashion folklore. Six young Belgian designers load their collections into a van and drive to London in 1986, handed a second floor spot at the British Designer Show between bridalwear and latex. So they make flyers, hand them out themselves, and somehow catch the eye of Barneys New York. The Antwerp Six are born – though they never called themselves that. British buyers just couldn’t pronounce the names.

Forty years on, MoMu in Antwerp has finally given Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene and Marina Yee the exhibition they deserve. Around 100 looks, rare archival material, personal documents, drawings, and six distinct gallery spaces – each as different in feel as the designers themselves. Demeulemeester’s room is all black and quiet. Van Beirendonck’s has a robot. Yee’s is a reconstruction of her studio as she left it, scraps of fabric and bottle caps and wire, the room of someone for whom process always mattered more than product. She passed away in 2025, the exhibition is dedicated to her.

What makes this more than a nostalgia trip is what it says about right now. No advertising, no celebrity dressing, no handbag push. Six people who invented their own rules and built something lasting anyway. In 2026, that reads less like history and more like a provocation.
