Chanel Brings La Galerie du 19M to Shanghai in a Celebration of Craft and Culture
Chanel is bringing la Galerie du 19M to Shanghai.
Founded by Chanel in 2021, le19M in Paris is an architectural concept built to house eleven fashion and decoration Maisons d’art with exceptional savoir-faire. But more than just a co-working community, the space also hosts la Galerie du 19M, a space dedicated to the public celebration and transmission of the Métiers d’art.
This autumn, for a limited time only, le19M is coming to Shanghai. The third floor of the Museum of Art Pudong will be taken over as a space that explores the relationship between France and China, art and the public.
La Galerie du 19M Shanghai will feature an introduction to the tools and techniques of the Métiers d’art and a retrospective exhibition celebrating the centenary of the Lesage embroidery and weaving House, who made some of Chanel’s most beloved tweed and embroidery patterns. To top it all off, there’s a group exhibition in collaboration with French and Chinese artists and artisans. Oh, and a programme of talks and workshops, in case that wasn’t enough for you.
This monumental partnership marks a new era for contemporary and heritage fashion, with heritage European brands often being apprehensive to share their history on a more global scale. By exploring the dialogue between France and China’s cultural capitals, le19M Shanghai allows for the mutual exchange of techniques and ideas, and brings a little slice of Paris to the streets of Shanghai.
